After winning last year’s South Australian and City of Melbourne Karting Titles; Lockie McHugh heads into 2010 with high hopes of building on his form in the Rookie class.
This year’s plans are to defend the South Australian and City of Melbourne Titles and McHugh is going to contest other major events such as the Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Tasmanian Titles.
“I’m really looking forward to this year, as the plans are to focus on all the major events and see if we can build on last year’s good results in the Rookie class,” expressed the 11-year-old from the Gold Coast in Queensland. “Each and every year the competition gets stronger and stronger and this year is going to be no different. The constant challenge makes Karting more enjoyable and that is why my family and I do it.”
McHugh, who drives a Kosmic brand of Kart, is well supported by his father Jamie and mechanic ex Australian Karting Title winner Graham Powells and that is one of the reasons for his recent success.
“It definitely helps having dad and Graham to help me at each race meeting and it gives me extra confidence,” he said. “Apart from their help with my Kart they are also there to give me a lot of driving tips and that helps a lot too.”
The year has started in strong fashion for McHugh when he just recently contested a club race meeting at Toowoomba’s Greer Park Raceway and he came away with the victory in the final for the Rookie class.
McHugh’s first major event of the year is going to be the annual Young Guns Title on the weekend of May 1 and 2 at Lismore Kart Track in Northern NSW. This is one event that McHugh has been successful at in the past.
Apart from his Karting commitments, McHugh is also following in his dads footsteps onto the Speedway. Recently, McHugh tried his hand at Junior Quarter Midget racing at Brisbane International Speedway and has really enjoyed the experience so far.
